With school returning in Surprise, the city's Police Department is sharing some back-to-school safety tips for drivers and for students.

As school begins, school buses, young pedestrians and some young bicyclists are making the early-morning commute to school throughout Surprise.

To ensure the children make it to their destination safely, police are asking motorists to be on the lookout during the commute.

Expect additional traffic on the roadways and plan to add a few more minutes to thecommute.

Starting this week, officers from the Surprise Police Department will be enhancing enforcement efforts around local schools.

The school zone enforcement will primarily be focused on the following issues:

  • Speeding in school zones
  • Not stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Passing in school zones

The city has also issued a back-to-school safety video here at youtu.be/oSGcrL8PwRA
