Surprise fire station completed on new pool campus

City's ninth firehouse became operational last week

Posted

The new Surprise pool and fire station project is officially halfway done.

City officials announced the completion of Fire Station 309 at the north side of Cactus Road at Perryville Road.

The station became operational last week, giving the city its ninth fire station and first in that southern part of the city.

A grand opening event for the public has been set for May, when the new Oasis Swim Center and Rescue Springs Park will open in the same campus.

Official details of the grand opening event haven't yet been announced.

The new fire station comes with several state-of-the art features, including four apparatus bays, a decontamination room, turn-out gear locker room, storage space for Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus equipment and an EMS room for medical supplies and equipment

It also comes with 10 dorms and a dedicated workstation area.

The Surprise Incident Command Center will also operate out of the new fire station.

City officials said the Command Center is designed to enhance the skills of fire service personnel in managing complex emergency incidents.

Firefighters will be able to practice critical decision-making, communication and coordination in realistic high-pressure training simulations.

The city's 10th fire station is already in the works, as well.

Surprise closed last week on about 27 acres of land for Fire Station 310 and other public safety facilities in the future. That station will be built near 185th Avenue and Deer Valley Road.

Residents voted to purchase the land as part of the 2023 bond election that funded transportation and public safety projects.

The Oasis pool will be the city's third when it opens. It will also be the biggest by far, with 50-meter competitive lanes and a diving pool among its features.

Surprise also has the Surprise Aquatic Center in City Center and the Hollyhock Pool in the Original Town Site.
