Surprise Fire-Medical slates 2 fire prevention week events

This year marks the 100-year anniversary of Fire Prevention Week globally and will be observed in Surprise from Oct. 9 to 15.

Started by the National Fire Protection Association in 1922, this year’s campaign aims to raise awareness for having and practicing a family escape plan. Since homes are filled with new materials that can burn faster, there may only be two minutes to escape home safely once a smoke alarm sounds.

Residents are encouraged to attend two upcoming Fire Prevention Week events presented by the Surprise Fire-Medical Department. Both events are free and will be at the Northwest Regional Library, 16089 N. Bullard Ave.

The community is encouraged to attend both events, one is focused on child education and the other is focused on adult education.

From 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10 is a family-friendly event perfect for all ages. Children can enjoy educational crafts and activities about fire prevention and interact with a fire truck.

There will be reading time with members of SFMD who will share some favorite kids’ stories about fire safety. Plus, families can also learn how to create and practice their own emergency and escape plans.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 is an event is for parents and adults to learn more about the process of creating an escape plan and lessons on home fire hazards. Members of SFMD will be providing fire safety information, and the prevention team will be talking with residents about topics including: kitchen fires, fire extinguishers, electrical safety and household chemical dangers.

A fire truck will also be at the event for participants to see and explore.
