Surprise continues 'sweet' push to attract IKEA to city

City celebrates Swedish Cinnamon Roll Day with social media campaign

Posted

The Surprise Economic Development Department is cooking up more IKEA-targeted fun on the heels of its over-the-top Aug. 23 Swedish Meatball Day campaign.

This time, the fun is in recognition of Swedish Cinnamon Roll Day, popularly celebrated in Sweden on Oct. 4.

The city of Surprise is gearing up to host the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce of Arizona on the morning of Oct. 3 for a special pre-“Kanelbullens dag” (Cinnamon Roll Day) tasting and competition, featuring the famous cinnamon roll creations of several Surprise-based businesses.

The Swedish American Chamber of Commerce of Arizona President Joacim Mattisson will accept a proclamation of Cinnamon Roll Day 2023 in Surprise from Mayor Skip Hall immediately following “cinn-amazing” award recognitions to several local bakeries.

The festivities will also coincide with a “sweet” site-selection proposal going out to IKEA from the Surprise Economic Development Department, including this short video.

IKEA is one of the city’s most-wanted retailers, according to the Surprise Annual Retail Survey, which asks residents which businesses they most want to see next in their community.

In 2023, more than 5,300 residents responded, and for the second year in a row IKEA landed among the Top 10 Most-Wanted.

With recent news that IKEA is looking to open 17 new stores in the United States, the Surprise team cooked up a sweet proposal and campaign aimed at getting the attention of the global retailer.
