New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows Surprise has one of the highest percentage of newer homes in the country.
Financial website 24/7 Wall Street reported Census Bureau figures show 26 cities with at least 65,000 people have more than half of their housing units built since 2000.
Surprise has the fifth-most new homes in the country with 69.4% of them build this century. The nationwide average for new homes is 19%.
Additionally, of homes built before 1960 — the year Surprise incorporated as a town — less than 1% are still left. Census figures show less than 500 of those homes are still remaining.
The numbers reflect Surprise’s massive growth since 2000.
The Census reports the median home value in Surprise is $231,900. That’s above the U.S. median of $217,600.
Surprise isn’t alone among Valley cities on the new-home chart.
West Valley cities Buckeye and Goodyear finished 1-2 on the list, while Avondale just cracked the top 10.
Other cities in the top 10 include Enterprise, Nevada (third); Frisco, Texas (fourth); Riverview, Florida (sixth); South Jordan, Utah (seventh); McKinney, Texas (eighth); and North Port, Florida (ninth).
Overall, Arizona, Nevada and Texas account for 15 of the 26 cities that made the list.
