Sun City DAR chapter honors Canyon Ridge students

Posted

The Sun City Agua Fria National Society Daughters of the American Revolution attended an awards ceremony to present participation certificates to more than 100 7th grade students at Canyon Ridge Elementary School, 17359 W. Surprise Farms Loop N, Surprise.

All of the students wrote essays entitled “The Voyage of the Mayflower.” This project celebrates the 400th anniversary of the pilgrims arriving in the Mayflower and the formation of Plymouth Colony.

Three judges were selected to read and judge the essays based on certain guidelines.  Two chapter members -- Cindy Dobbins and Kathie Mittlesteadt -- and a non-chapter member, Anita Borski, volunteered to be the judges. Their goal was to select a Chapter first place winner.

First place Agua Fria DAR Chapter winner Mariah E. Torrez received a special National Society DAR certificate and bronze medal with the wording “Excellence in History, DAR Award.” Her essay has been entered into the Arizona State DAR contest.  If she wins first place at the state level, her essay will advance to the National DAR level.
