A presentation is coming to Surprise about “Understanding Dementia: A Challenging Journey.”

It’s from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Feb. 9 at Grand Community Baptist Church, 18350 N. Goldwater Ridge Drive.

This free event is provided by Hospice of the Valley in partnership with the Banner Sun Health Research Institute, Benevilla, Dementia Friends Arizona and Home Instead Senior Care.

Hospice of the Valley Dementia Program Director Maribeth Gallagher will explain how the disease progresses, and teaches caregivers how to connect with the person with dementia and reduce stress.

Gallagher is a psychiatric nurse practitioner with a doctoral degree in nursing. Her commitment to improving dementia care was initially inspired by her own experience as a family caregiver.

Registration begins at 8: 30 a.m. and a free continental breakfast is provided. To RSVP, email events6@hov.org or call 602-776-6793.
