The Kansas City Royals broke ground July 9 on The Fountains at Surprise Center, their new four-story player housing complex, just south of a similiar facility for the Texas Rangers, which opened up late last year.
The complex will include 47 apartment units, a meeting room, classroom, and dining and lounging areas with a common area of about 7,200 square feet.
Outside amenities include a swimming pool, covered seating area and barbecue stations.
In a video posted on the city of Surprise’s social media sites, Mayor Skip Hall said, “We’ve had nearly a 20-year partnership with the Kansas City Royals and spring training. And this is just another chapter in that.”
In the video, the project’s developer Patrick Boyd called it “a next-level housing facility for the major league baseball teams.”
“It’s a place to relax and take refuge from the ten hours of baseball that they play everyday,” Mr. Boyd said.
The units will hold up to 172 players and staff members.
“Having a more permanent base to live makes you more of the community,” Nick Leto, the Royals’ manager for Arizona Operations said in the video. “You’re going to feel more of the community. It’s a wonderful project.”
