Jordan Lusby finds way serve kids quarantining at home

On Veteran’s Day, Peoria’s American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 62, 9847 W. Desert Cove Ave., awarded 11-year-old Surprise resident Jordan Lusby a National ALA Good Deed award for her efforts to bring joy to youngsters all over the Valley.

Good Deed and Youth Heroism Awards are part of the American Legion Auxiliary’s Children and Youth program. Recognizing youth who demonstrate community service celebrating “Service Not Self” is part of the auxiliary’s mission to protect, care for and support children and youth, particularly those of veterans and military families.

The presentation was part of the Veteran’s Day appreciation ceremony Post 62 hosts annually. The presentation followed the flag raising ceremony conducted by the Post 62 Color Guard.

Jordan knew that kids were stuck at home due to COVID and that they needed to have fun with other kids. Knowing that they couldn’t play together, Jordan decided that giving toys and goodies anonymously was the next best thing.

She created a Facebook group called “Kids Kindness.” Parents whose kids needed a “lift” wrote a short description of what would put a smile on their kids’ face. Other kids in the area would make up a basket and deliver it anonymously to the requesting family.

Her Facebook page got nearly 800 likes, and requests for baskets came in from all over the Valley.

Goodyear resident and Unit 62 vice president Stephanie McMullen presented the award as part of her appreciation address to veterans attending the event.

The event was livestreamed—for the fifth year-- by the Peoria Student Media Network from Centennial High School, 14388 N. 79th Ave., Peoria.

“Because of COVID, we have many members who cannot attend public events,” Unit president Tammy Early said. “Having the professional work of these high school students makes a real difference to them.”

Jordan received a certificate signed by the ALA national president, and a gift basket of her own filled with patriotic items.

“The Post 62 Auxiliary always does a great job honoring veterans—especially on Veteran’s Day,” Vietnam veteran and Post 62 commander John Murnan said. “We were pleased to ‘share’ the stage with Jordan—she represents the future of our country.”
