Letters: Surprise is unique without flashing signs

As Jason Stone describes [“Surprise considers electric billboard, July 28], the Loop 303 is a major artery through Surprise.
It is a beautiful drive, with the contrast between the Arizona blue sky and the earth-toned landscaping and highway art. It’s different because it is so clear and beautiful. Not gaudy. Not sold out. The power lines aren’t gaudy. Their lines are interesting and architectural.
Putting flashing, distracting signs there or anywhere on 303 is what would be gaudy.
Surprise is different and better than any other town because it’s just blue skies setting off art everywhere, including the library tree sculpture and along the main artery, 303.
The city council should not sell out Surprise. People who want to see gaudy, flashing billboards can drive a few miles and see them in every other town and all along I-10 and I-8.
Keep Surprise different and beautiful so the people who live there can enjoy it. And people who are thinking about moving there will see it as different: prettier, cleaner, better.
My parents moved there because it was beautiful and different and, for all those considering Surprise for raising children or for retirement, Surprise will be a top choice of it remains different — pristine blue skies and highway art.
