District 5

Letters: Reader throws support behind Jack Hastings

Posted

In this year’s city election on Aug. 4, voters in District 5 will have a unique opportunity. They can elect a fresh new face to the Surprise City Council.

For many years, our Council has been made up of older, retired folks. Not a bad thing, mind you, but many with the same mindset.

What is that mindset, you may ask? It’s the old “that’s the way we’ve always done things” mentality. Now, that is not always a bad thing and change for the sake of change is not always a good thing, but once in a while a new face appears in a refreshing way.

That fresh face is a young man by the name of Jack Hastings. I met Jack a few months ago (pre-quaratine) when he knocked on my door to introduce himself as a candidate for City Council in District 5. No one has every personally come to me to ask for my vote.

As a 12-year veteran of the city council in my hometown, i was interested in what he had to say and who he actually was.

This is what I learned: He’s young. He is extremely enthusiastic. He is already strongly involved in our community. He is a longtime resident of Surprise. He teaches in our local schools. He has a strong Christian faith. And he is politcally open-minded.

When was the last time someone with all of those attributes was actually interested in putting them to work on the city council? I’ve lived here about a dozen years, and this is the first time I’ve witnessed it.

Surprise is a young, growing city, and we could use someone like Jack to bring some fresh new ideas to our city government. His enthusiasm is contageous and he has been working hard on his campaign even though we have all been locked down these past several weeks.

If you haven’t met Jack yet, I have no doubt you soon will. Jack is burning a lot of shoe leather going door to door to earn your vote.

Give him a chance to show the city what he can do.

I know I am voting for Jack Hastings, and I hope you will, too.
