Letters: Fountain won’t keep district’s residents safe

Posted

I wanted to educate myself about the candidates running for the Surprise City Council District 2 seat.

First, I went to Aly Cline’s campaign website and Facebook page. I found a long history of volunteer experience with charities, the Surprise library and Sun City Grand (a small city in itself). I see opportunity where Ms. Cline’s experience on the Sun City Grand Long Range Planning Committee could be applied to the future Surprise City Center project.

I was unable to locate a campaign website for Wendell Fountain. The WendellFountain.com website that Mr. Fountain directs people to looks more like a Barnes and Noble website where Mr. Fountain sells his books. No platform statement whatsoever.

I was unable to find any history of volunteering in the Surprise area in the three years that Mr. Fountain has lived in Surprise.

I did locate Mr. Fountain’s Facebook page. I will focus on Mr. Fountain’s posts related only to face masks.

• Earlier this morning (July 10), Mr. Fountain posted “It’s all a farce and a fraudulent plan to cause Americans to become submissive to an out of control government.”

• On July 8, Mr. Fountain posted “they have no right to hinder our ability to practice free speech.”

• On July 7, he posted “We the People have a Constitution to protect us from out of control government officials.”

I found it alarming that a person, who wants to represent a constituency that is primarily seniors (Sun City Grand and Arizona Traditions), would be so opposed to measures that would protect their constituents who are at high risk from a global pandemic.

As a senior with diabetes and having had a triple bypass, my decision was simple. I decided to protect myself and choose someone I feel will represent my best interests. I just voted for Aly Cline and dropped my ballot in the mail.
