Letters: Drivers are ignoring posted speed limits

Posted

We are writing this as we would like to let people, especially residents of Sun City Grand to please observe the posted speed limits in our community. About a month ago the manager of the complex sent out an email on “Grand info” to remind the community to observe posted speed limits and crosswalk signs.

However, it seems that this has fallen on blind eyes as a majority of residents, as well as passer-thrus can’t seem to read or see the crosswalk signs. The posted speed limits are set at 35 mph, 45 mph as many seem to believe, on Sunrise Boulevard, Goldwater Ridge, Goldwater Canyon, and Mountain View/Clearview drives, which are the main thoroughfares.

Also, the posted speed limit in all residential streets is 25 mph as those are residential areas. The residential streets have both pedestrian and golf crosswalks, as does Goldwater Ridge, Goldwater Canyon and Mountain View/Clearview.

Just because the snowbirds are not in town, it does not mean drivers have the right to ignore the speed limits. One of the biggest problems is the almost total lack of police enforcement of the speed limits. What we probably need then is a series of speed bumps, even on the major roads used by fire, police and EMTs.

Some drivers even ignore the stop signs and the only signal in the community. We have observed on too many occasions that people make too abrupt and fast turns into residential streets. Often people crossing at even marked crosswalks put their lives in jeopardy as too many drives do not stop or slow down, or do not stop if another vehicle has stopped.

Some pedestrians have been injured and even killed due to driver negligence. Too many people do not bother to make a complete stop at the red light or a stop sign before making at turn on to the adjoining street. We have seen this especially at the corner of sunrise and mountainview when coming into the community.

Is it unreasonable, for us as residents, to ask for greater numbers of speed enforcement vehicles? We did contact the Surprise Police Department a few months about speed enforement on Mountain View and the department did put a stationary speed limit warining sign on the streeet for a few days at the junction of Mountain View and Shadow Mountain since we had speed problem there, and we still do.

Perhaps we need to have some “marked” cars like the Sun City West Posse to look official. There are no stop signs westbound between Shadow Mountain and Goldwater Ridge on the Mountain View/Clearview Drives.
