Letters: City should approve digital signs ASAP

Posted

I read with interest your article on the NIMBY’s from Corte Bella [“Digital billboard deate rages on,” Sept. 29] and have a few thoughts.

First, digital billboards would be of great benefit to the businesses in Surprise as well as the city itself with its free adverts the city can utilize.

Second, I usually agree with Councilman Jack Hastings but in this case he is dead wrong. He claims he is opposed because he stands with his constituents’ views. When did Corte Bella residents become his constituents?

They decided years ago to remain in unincorporated Maricopa County along with the rest of Sun City West, so frankly they don’t even get a voice in this debate and should not even be allowed in Surprise City Council meetings discussing this matter.

They wanted to remain unincorporated, so deal with the consequences if Surprise wants to put digital signs in Surprise. Corte Bella NIMBY’s have no say in the matter, the Council should require valid proof of Surprise residency to even attend a council meeting.

Third, everyone always says they want Surprise to have more amenities and big city restaurants and shopping, so things like these billboards go hand in hand with that and show these businesses that Surprise is business-friendly.

I fully support this endeavor and urge the city council to approve this ASAP.
