Letters: Affordable housing isn’t benefit to all

Posted

I just read the article about the mayor’s proposal of creating affordable housing in Surprise [“Mayor: City needs more affordable housing,” June 2].

I believe the first responsibility of any city government is to do no harm.

Proposals like this should first have benefit for the people already living in Surprise. I fail to see how low-cost housing benefits me or anyone currently living here.

To the contrary, low-cost housing has built in negatives for current residents ranging from lower property values to crime.

I expect ideas like this from my teenage granddaughter — sincere, well-meaning, but terribly naive.

Sound public policy should be based practicle, realistic mature economic decisions not far left ideology.
