In honor of Military Appreciation Month and Teacher Appreciation Week in May, Legacy Traditional Schools spotlighted a teacher who has dedicated her life to serving her country and students.
Jacqueline Brown, a special education teacher at Legacy-West Surprise, whose journey began right out of high school when she joined the Air Force, following in the footsteps of family members.
For 25 years, she served her country with distinction, retiring as a Master Sargeant from the Air Force. During her tenure, Brown experienced deployments to various locations, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain, contributing her skills in computer programming, protocol, and career advising.
Upon retiring, Ms. Brown transitioning from the military to a career in teaching. A chance encounter with the “Troops to Teachers” program sparked her interest, ultimately leading her to pursue a master’s degree in special education.
She serves as the ESS teacher for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students. Integrating her military experience into her lessons, she captivates her students with stories from her travels and brings these experiences to life through vivid descriptions, personal anecdotes and visual aids.
With nine years of teaching under her belt Brown believes that veterans bring unique strengths and perspectives to the classroom. The discipline and classroom management skills honed during their service provide a strong foundation and exposure to diverse cultures and experiences fosters an inclusive and welcoming learning environment.
