APS is currently in the process of conducting technical analysis to determine the potential routing options for the new 230kV power lines.

Another round of public comment will be solicited following the determination of a preferred route. More information should be available at the end of February. Please continue to check my website, newsletters, and Facebook for updates!

2021 Surprise City Academy

The Surprise City Academy is going virtual this year. Classes will begin on February 22 and will happen weekly on Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. through April 26. The Surprise City Academy is a great way to learn about city government structure, get updated on local issues, and get to know your city leaders! The class is FREE, but you must be registered. Keep it Beautiful, Surprise!

Help Surprise stay a safe, clean and attractive city! Litter can be found on city streets and public spaces, and we’d like to focus on cleaning it up before it becomes a growing issue. How can you help?

  • Throw your trash away
  • Pick up Litter
  • Secure your load
  • Clean up after your pets
  • Volunteer for a community cleanup
  • Help spread the word by encouraging others to #keepitbeautifulsurprise

Day of Service

If you are looking for a way to help others, please consider helping out during the Surprise Day of Service on Feb. 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will help with various projects, including landscaping, painting, trimming of shrubs, debris removal, and more. Projects will help neighborhoods and homeowners who may not be physically or financially able to maintain their homes. Holiday Sanitation Schedule

City offices are closed on Feb. 15 in observance of Presidents’ Day. Please note that the holiday sanitation schedule will be in effect.

Spring Training

Spring training 2021 is scheduled to begin on Feb. 27. The Texas Rangers are set to take on the Kansas City Royals on Feb. 27 at 1:05 p.m. For a complete schedule of games and updated information on ticket sales and safety protocols, please visit SurpriseStadium.com or call 623-222-2222. Due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, the spring training schedule and information is subject to change.

What’s Happening on that Lot?

  • Amazon construction is moving along and expected to be completed by April 2021.
  • EOS Fitness Marley Park, located at 13644 N. Litchfield Park
  • Horizon Aviation & Machining, located 11267 N. 132nd Avenue
  • Ancona at Surprise Pointe 33, located at the NWC of Dysart Road and Sweetwater Avenue. This 27 acre site will house two industrial buildings, one 84,300 sq.ft. and the other 72,000 sq.ft., each containing 12 spec suites.

Fire Station 308 Update

Construction is continuing on Fire Station 308, located at the southeast corner of Litchfield Road and Cactus Road.

Business Resource

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) has reopened for new borrowers and certain existing PPP borrowers. Summary information on the PPP is available on surpriseaz.gov/businesshelp, under Business Resources.

Council Meetings and Agenda

The next regularly scheduled City Council Meeting will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. Council meetings are currently closed to in-person attendance. To watch live, please visit surpriseaz.gov/surprisetv, or the Surprise City Gov Facebook page at facebook.com/cityofsurprise. Cox channel 11 and Century Link channel 8513 will also carry the meetings live. Public comment will be accepted by phone and email. Instructions for public comment will be included on each meeting agenda. Agendas are always posted online at a minimum of two days prior.

If you see something on the agenda that concerns you, please reach out before the meeting so I have time to address your concern. I may even ask your questions during the City Council presentation. The best way to reach me is chris.judd@surpriseaz.gov.
