Highland Prep fires up robotics competition in Surprise

Posted

The Vex Robotics Team at Highland Prep School just began competition season.
The team, under the leadership of Highland Prep STEM coach Nathan Schulz, participated in its first competition on Oct. 23 at Desert Ridge High School in Mesa.

The Highland Prep Hacksaws, Technical Difficulties, and Honey Badger Robotics Teams competed against 30 other teams from around the region to earn a spot in the state tournament.

And one of the teams took first place in the first event in school history. Jordan Reid, Eithan Makal, Alexia Rodriguez and Corbin Dixon were members of the winning Highland Prep Hacksaws, which is the first team in Arizona to already qualify for the state tournament this year

The Vex Robotics team is one of the ways Highland Prep honors its commitment to helping students excel in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In cooperation with the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation, the Vex Robotics competitions allow students the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in coding, robotics, design, and other STEM subjects.

“Vex Robotics is a unique competition where alliances of two teams compete against each other to attain a higher score by scoring rings, moving mobile goals, and elevating on platforms,” Schulz said.

Schulz, who was recently promoted to his position of STEM Coach after serving as a math teacher, said he is excited to have the students participate in an event where they rely on both their coding and driving skills. Highland Prep will host its own state-qualifying competition on Dec. 11.

Highland Prep is a STEM-focused college-preparatory high school at 15600 W. Hearn Road in Surprise, offering students advanced preparation for college, while becoming proficient in coding, robotics, and AutoCAD design.
