Grieshaber: CTE options abound in Dysart district

Posted

Career and technical education programs are so critical in building our future workforce, and yet many people may not realize we have these great programs right in our community.

Dysart Schools offer students the opportunity to explore 17 different programs offered on site at our four high schools — Dysart, Shadow Ridge, Valley Vista and Willow Canyon high school.

Additionally, students that attend a designated Dysart middle school can explore these program options through an elective class to help prepare them for choosing a program to pursue in high school.

Program options include automotive technology, culinary arts, digital animation, digital photography, education professions, engineering, film and TV production, fire science, graphic design, laboratory assisting, law and public safety, marketing, nursing services, software and app design, sports medicine, stagecraft design and production and technology device maintenance.

Additional opportunities are available off-campus through a strong partnership with West-MEC, and thanks to a grant, Dysart is now even able to provide transportation for students that attend West-MEC classes on the Northwest Campus.

CTE participants get a strong head-start to a great career, and learn the skills needed to compete in the workforce. Evidence shows us that students who participate in CTE programs even tend to have a greater success rate in high school with a graduation rate significantly higher than the state average. In Dysart Schools we have nearly 5,000 students that take CTE courses each year.

Students in CTE programs have unique opportunities for personal and professional growth through internships, industry certifications and participation in student organizations. Dysart has many great business partnerships in place to provide students with internships and extended learning opportunities.

Currently we are working with Sun Health, Banner Health, Subaru Superstore of Surprise, Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce and the city of Surprise. We are always looking for more interested businesses as well to grow our programs.

Dysart is hosting a Career and College Expo for students and families to learn more on Oct. 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the district office, which is located at 15802 N. Parkview Place.

The community is invited to attend to learn more about the many CTE program choices that Dysart offers. Additionally, we will have West-MEC, colleges and universities along with military representatives available for families to meet with and get information.

We recommend families of fifth- to 11th-graders attend to explore the many options available. Anyone interested in learning more about Dysart’s Career and Technical Education programs can visit Dysart.org/CTE at any time to see the many opportunities available.

Editor’s Note: Jim Grieshaber is the director of career and technical education for the Dysart Unified School District.
