The Madhouse on McDowell will say hello to basketball once again as several state high school basketball championships will be played at the Phoenix venue.

The Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1826 W. McDowell Road, Phoenix, will host Arizona Interscholastic Association Basketball State Championship games for 2A-4A. The 5A and 6A games will return to ASU’s Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, and 1A will again be at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.

“We’re really excited for our student-athletes to have the opportunity to culminate their seasons at one of the most iconic venues in the Valley,” Executive Director David Hines stated in a release. “With some of the improvements being made it is sure to be an experience everyone will remember. And we also appreciate the efforts of the folks at the Findley Toyota Center and Arizona State for their continued support of high school championships. It’s always a first-class event when we’re there.”

The 1A championship games are Saturday, Feb. 22. The 2A-4A championship games will be held on Saturday, Feb. 29. The 5A championship games will take place on Monday, March 2 and 6A will tip off the following day. Times are to be determined for all games in the Prescott area and at Veterans Memorial Coliseum and will depend on matchups and travel plans of the participating teams, according to a release. The AIA brackets will have times for the games as the postseason begins.

Home to the Phoenix Suns from 1968 to 1992, “The Madhouse on McDowell” will also host the 2A and 3A state semifinal games on Friday, Feb. 28. The 4A conference chose to conduct its state semifinal games at high seed sites before moving over to Veterans Memorial Coliseum for the championship contests, the release states. It is the first time the AIA has brought the state championships to the venue.

The 5A and 6A conferences also decided to conduct their state semifinals at high seed sites prior to the championship games at ASU. The matchups from Desert Financial Arena will be tape delayed on Fox Sports Arizona, with all state semifinal and championship games being streamed online at NFHSNetwork.com. Selected early round games will also be streamed online and fans are encouraged to subscribe to the NFHS Network for access to the entire postseason and a listing of games.

The Veterans Memorial Coliseum will also be the home venue for the 2020 season of the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA.
