WEST VALLEY PREPS
Catching up with high school golf in Surprise
Posted
Compiled by Richard Smith
The high school boys and girls golf season began in August at schools across the state.
West Valley Preps and the Surprise Independent asked local high school coaches about how their seasons are going so far. Here are their responses.
Shadow Ridge Stallions
Boys coach: Scott Lihs (eighth year) Region: Division I Southwest Who are your top returning golfers? Top returners this year are Andrew Chayrez, a senior who has been a state competitor all three years, Quinn Toomey, a junior, and Hogan Diver, a sophomore. Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? A move in from Washington, Cooper Carl. What is your team’s best attribute so far this season? Besides the top two (Chayrez and Toomey) we are young and improving, have three promising freshman who just took up the game.
What are your highlights so far this season? And what are you looking forward to the rest of the year? We have a great schedule on a lot of great courses against quality teams, putting our players in the best possible position to make a run at qualifying for the state tournament.
Valley Vista Monsoon
Girls coach: Steve Trezzo (eighth year) Region: Division I Southwest/Yuma Who are your top returning golfers? Nikki Bowen and Skylar Spinella. Nikki Bowen tied for 12th last year in state as a sophomore. Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? Felicity Guzman, Lydia Williams. What is your team’s best attribute so far this season? Attitude — It is an actual joy to spend time with these ladies. They are all exceptional people that have great hearts! We have been battling the heat it seems more than in the past years, but they keep getting better and working on their game. So proud of them. What are your highlights so far this season? And what are you looking forward to the rest of the year? The team gets along so well. We have so much fun but at the same time can be focused on bettering ourselves and being better golfers. Each one of my athletes put academics first. Nikki Bowen has been E and +1 through two matches. She finished in state last year as No. 12, but is ready to crack the top seven or better this year at state.
