The Arts HQ Gallery announced the opening of the “IMPRINT: African Americans in the Arts” exhibit, featuring the works of local Black artists from Arizona and celebrating their rich cultural contributions and impact on the art world in general and in the West Valley specifically.

The exhibit runs from Jan. 10 through Feb. 13 at the Arts HQ Gallery, 16126 N. Civic Center Plaza.

Visitors will experience a diverse range of two- and three-dimensional artwork that reflects the experiences, perspectives and creativity of the artists.

There is also a chance to meet the artists at the opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17. This is an opportunity for the public to learn about the artists’ creative process and gain insight into the stories behind their artwork.

Admission is free.

The gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

A special drum circle workshop will also take place during the exhibit from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Dr. Lydia Woods, of Drum Arizona, will lead the group, where participants will experience the powerful and moving rhythm of African Djembe drums. This hands-on workshop provides a unique opportunity to connect with the heart of the music while surrounded by the vibrant artwork of local African-American artists.

The cost is $25 per person and icludes drum to use during the workshop.

Tickets are available online at Eventbrite by searching “Drum Circle Tickets.” Space is limited.

This engaging event is perfect for all ages, and no prior drumming experience is necessary. Grab a friend, reserve a seat, and kick off the new year with a powerful, rhythm-filled experience.
