The West Valley Preps football player of the week vote returned for a 2020 season that started six weeks late.

Voters were back in big numbers. A total of 5,030 votes were cast by 2 p.m. Oct. 13.

Fans of two schools, Shadow Ridge and Valley Vista, drove the vote totals. And when the polls closed, Valley Vista senior quarterback Burton Delay edged Shadow Ridge senior running back Jacob Thurman by a margin of 2,293 votes to 2,054 votes.

Delay completed 16 of 22 passes for 421 yards  and six touchdowns in the Monsoon's 45-17 rout of Agua Fria Oct. 2.

In the Stallions' 41-31 victory over Chandler Basha that same night, Thurman rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Dysart quarterback Ruben Falcon was a distant third with 354 votes. Hecompleted all three of his passes for three touchdowns and 80 yards, and rushed for 109 yards and three touchdowns in the Demons' 43-0 opening win over Scottsdale Coronado.

For the fifth straight year, player of the week honorees, including Delay will win more than bragging rights.
