A look back at this week in Surprise history
Posted
By Independent Newsmedia
Here is a look at Surprise history through the years on this week, compiled from archives of Independent Newsmedia, Newspapers.com and the city of Surprise historical records:
1949
Arizona Republic details birth of Surprise. Pioneer Marcel Sadieux parked his trailer on a dirt road that led to Luke Field becoming the first settler. Laura Bolen writes in that in the late 1930s only two or three families were settled here.
1974
Surprise adds a rodeo for its 14th annual Founders Day celebration. A combination of citizens with the Surprise sheriff’s posse and town councilmen converted a vacant lot at Hollyhock Street and Santa Fe Avenue into a rodeo ground. (It will one day be the site for the Hollyhock Pool.)
1998
The Dysart Unified School District votes to raise its meal prices for the first time in eight years. Breakfast will now cost 75 cents for students and $1.25 for adults. Lunch will be $1.50 and $2.25.
2000
The Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals sign preliminary contracts agreeing to relocate from Florida to Surprise if construction on Surprise Stadium begins in early 2001.
