Arizona documentary ‘You Racist, Sexist, Bigot’ shares stories of discrimination

West Valley Arts, Vision & Sound: An African American Experience, and YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix will host a screening of the film “You Racist, Sexist, Bigot” and panel discussion 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16 at Estrella Mountain Community College, 3000 N. Dysart Road, Avondale.

Conceived and filmed in Arizona, “You Racist, Sexist, Bigot” features first-voice stories of discrimination and hope, powerfully and intimately featuring people’s experiences of bigotry, a news release states. With an original soundtrack which speaks of love, justice and the need for family and community “You Racist, Sexist, Bigot” follows the struggles that occur every day not just in Arizona but in neighborhoods and cities across the United States.

The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring local community members sharing reactions to the film and tangible actions the audience can take to raise consciousness and awareness of social and racial justice in their own networks.

“YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women and are committed to be a safe space where courageous conversations about race and gender equality can occur,” YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix CEO Debbie Esparza stated. “In our experience, using an artistic medium to raise consciousness and awareness of inequality help people to engage with this topic in unique and powerful ways. We are thrilled West Valley Arts Council, Vision & Sound, and Estrella Mountain Community College were willing to partner with us to bring this film to the West Valley.”

Tickets are $10 for the public and $2 for Estrella Mountain Community College students, and are available at ywcaaz.org/yrsb. The film screening is part of Vision & Sound’s annual series of events designed to promote an understanding and appreciation of African American art, music, film and literature.

Since 1912, YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix has been on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Visit ywcaaz.org.
