Valley Vista athletes aid Sun City West church

Posted

The girls basketball and football programs at Valley Vista High School have donated hours of public service to Desert Garden United Church of Christ in Sun City West in the past three years.

These young athletes have made it much easier on these seniors to provide support to several local charities. The Valley Vista girls helped to clean up the entire rummage area at Desert Garden the previous two years. They moved furniture, packed clothing and did a lot of the heavy work the church members found difficult to complete.

Coach Rachel Matakas worked alongside her players and helped the seniors clean up a massive amount of material. The girls missed this year because they were playing for their sixth state basketball title at the same time the rummage sale was held.

The football program donated six Saturday mornings during a two-year period gleaning citrus trees in the Sun City West area. Head coach Derek Wahlstrom and assistants Hollins, Grant and Keenan worked alongside the players picking large amounts of citrus (more than 6,000 pounds in February).

The fruit goes to St. Mary’s Food Bank and is distributed to needy recipients. The football players also spent a full Saturday morning helping with the church rummage sale clean up.
