Memory Lane Games, a United Kingdom-based company, expanded into the AZ TechCelerator, 12425 W. Bell Road, Surprise.
The company provides an app focused on supporting those with cognitive decline. Supported by a suite of training videos, the picture-book questions and answers can be tailored for the individual by either professional caregivers or family.
The app is simple to use, never flags “wrong” answers and helps promote conversation. The app also encourages grandchildren to get involved by bridging the technology gap with their senior relatives in a way that is comfortable for both.
Debra Roubik of the Surprise AZ TechCelerator, who was instrumental in bringing Memory Lane Games to Surprise, was first introduced to the company during a Zoom meeting almost a full year ago.
“It was hard watching my mom’s decline from dementia, she said. “The only way we could really connect was through family photos. So, when I saw the format of this app, I knew it would have made a difference with Mom. And, I wanted them in Arizona!”
Memory Lane Games Vice President Brian Hall’s trip to Arizona was triggered by both the Arizona’s density of senior care, particularly around Phoenix, but also the organization’s perception that the state has a more holistic community than is found elsewhere.
“You really put your seniors at the heart of your communities here,” he said.
Also, the presence of Banner Sun Health Research Institute, 10515 W. Santa Fe Drive, Sun City, which conducts brain research every day, and the Dementia Friendly Surprise Initiative helped make the company’s decision.
