The Sun City West Tennis Club provided 55 backpacks to the Washington Activity Center for children as the new school season starts.
Part of the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Centers, WAC is next to Washington High School at 2240 W. Citrus Way. It provides an outlet for children in the surrounding under-served community. Their aim is to give children a variety of activities to participate in after school and on weekends.
“Supporting organizations that help underserved kids is an integral part of our club’s charity road map. It’s a win-win for both the kids and the Tennis Club,” states Joel Piaskowski, charity chairperson for the Tennis Club.
Some of the various activities include T-Ball (ages 3-5), basketball clinics (ages 5-15), ballet (ages 4-9), music and movement (ages 3-9), soccer (ages 3-8) and their teen program of “Game & Movie” nights for ages 13-17. Many of the coaches for all these sports and activities are volunteer.
“These backpacks will help bring a smile to many kids as they go back to school. A small gesture as this goes a long, long way to the surrounding community,” stated WAC Director Tony Tarango.
