Sun City West senior softball player enters hall of fame

Melvin A. Bentley was inducted into the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame Nov. 12 during a ceremony at Rose Mofford Sports Complex. 9833 N. 28th Ave.

The 85-year-old Bentley began his senior softball career 27 years ago at the age of 59. Over the years he has received many awards including World Champion Most Valuable Player, Tournament of Champions Most Valuable Player and won the 2009 Triple Crown with the Sun City West Sidewinders 70 Major Plus team.

The awards are great, but it’s what your teammates say about you that is dear to Bentley.

“Mel is not only a great player, but he is a gentleman on and off the field. He is supportive of his teammates and shows the highest level of sportsmanship,” stated teammate Argie Haddock.

When asked about the best part of his softball career, Bentley says he enjoys the community and family spirit among his teammates. He attributes his longevity in softball to good health and avoiding injuries, although he had been knocked out a couple of times by line drives back through the pitcher’s box. He would like to play at least four more years and add to his estimated total of 5,200 games he’s played.
