Sun City West Legion post provides final respects with honor

Posted

Sun City West Post 94 is one of three American Legion posts in the metro Phoenix area that regularly provide honor guard services at veteran funerals held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

Post 94 currently has 13 members as part of the honor guard, which also provides a bugler for “Taps,” when needed. During the past five years, Post 94 has provided just over 600 honor guard services at veteran funerals, with 559 of those being at the National Cemetery. In addition to honor guard services at funerals, they regularly participate in numerous local area civic events on holidays that remember and honor veterans. The Post also provides color guard services at community activities in the Sun City West area.

Several members of Post 94 participate in the Missing in America Project, which is held at the National Cemetery. The M.I.A. Project is a nonprofit organization encompassing a nation-wide effort dedicated to locating, identifying, verifying and interring the unclaimed cremated remains of American veterans through the joint efforts of private, state and federal organizations. This interment service for participants and observers provides honor and respect to those who have served America by securing a final resting place for these forgotten heroes.

As a personal tribute and service to veterans and their families, one Post 94 member Jerry Goldsmith has over the years photographed more than 45,000 veteran tombstones and memorials, which at times includes family member names, which he then posts to national database Findagrave, findagrave.com. This helps family members across the country locate their relative’s remains.

Post 94 is also the caretaker of the Memorial Boulevard of Flags along R.H. Johnson Blvd. Post members raise and lower memorial flags on the various holidays that remember veterans and the military’s participation in wars.

Post 94 holds regular monthly membership meetings 10 a.m. the first Thursday of the month in the Quail Room of the Sun City West Foundation Building. All veterans are welcome and encouraged to attend.
