It was a round to remember for George Dillon, who sunk a pair of aces in one round March 24 at Echo Mesa Golf Course.
The Michigan native notched his first hole in one of the round on the 106-yard par 3 No. 3 with a pitching wedge and followed 12 holes later with another ace on the 96-yard par 3 No. 15.
“I was shocked when I saw the second one go in,” Dillon said. “It was like an out of body experience.”
His playing partners – Tony Bernstein, Tim Fish and Mike Rocha – had a front row seat to the rare feat.
“The unusual thing about it was every one in the group saw it go in,” Dillon said. “If you play golf you know a lot of times other players are off getting a tee from their bag or washing a ball, but this day were all up at the tee box watching.”
Dillon sunk his first hole in one in 1989 and another in 1991. It took 30 years for him land another one, but in the meantime the avid Sun City West golfer said he holed out a couple of par 4s, including Deer Valley Golf Course.
Golf’s unwritten rule is that a golf with a hole in one must buy a drinks for the club after the round. For Dillon, that meant two.
“We finished our round in the late afternoon so a lot of folks had already left,” he said. “I ended up buying a round for our foursome, and then a couple of pitchers a few days later.”
