Last year, Sun City West Cycling Club member Anne Brown completed over 10,200 miles and Mary Anderson completed over 7,600 miles in daily rides. They are the oldest female riders in the club and have earned impressive credentials. They both regularly complete a birthday ride where they ride a mile for each year of their age in one day.
Brown regularly leads a weekday long, slow group ride for club members ranging from 25-40 miles with a social coffee stop. Anderson is a regular participant in this group. Brown was club president in 2016-17 and helped create Bikes for Kids in 2017, where members collect and donate bikes for children in need at Christmas. In 2024, the year-to-date donations reached 223 bikes. Brown was treasurer and vice-president on the Sun City West Board of Directors and continues to lead special assemblies as well as volunteer at the library.
In 2006, at age 66, Anderson rode a recumbent bicycle along the west coast from Vancouver, BC to the California-Mexico border with friends. Anderson also completed the Sun City 12-hour challenge in 2023 and rode 100 miles that night. Five years ago, she started riding an e-bike and began riding at least 5,000 miles a year. In 2020, during COVID, she upped it to 10,000 miles that year, but found that distance tended to burned her out and found 7,500 (150 miles per week) to be a doable distance for her.
The club offers something for all cyclists.
