Developing Capable People: Roadmap for Child Development will be offered next month by Beth Emeth Congregation of the West Valley.

Presented by Bruce Cohen, retired clinical and adolescent psychotherapist at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, this four part interactive series will offer parents and grandparents an opportunity to develop new skills and insights in helping their children and grandchildren gain the perceptions and skills they need to become capable and better able to face life’s challenges.

All sessions will be 1-4 p.m. at 13702 W. Meeker Blvd.

Session one, on Feb. 2, is a “Introduction of the Significant Seven.” There are three perceptions and four skills that give children the tools they need to more effectively face life challenges. Research shows as children develop capabilities in these areas they become less at risk. Participants will also be asked to discuss expectations and concerns.

Session two, Feb. 9, concerns “Adult Roles in Promoting Growth.” Research shows there are five adult behaviors that help children grow in the Significant Seven and act as barriers to children becoming more capable in these areas. This session will focus on strategies that will better promote problem solving in children.

Session three, Feb. 16, is a “Deeper Look into the Three Perceptions.” This includes Perceptions of Personal Capabilties, Perceptions of Personal Significance and Perceptions of Personal Influence. The discussions in this session will offer adults ways to help children gain the key perceptions they need to become capable and better able to face life’s challenges.

Session four, Feb. 23, is “Navigating the World.” The four life skills of the Significant Seven will be examined and the techniques adults can use to help children gain these key skills will be taught.

Cost of the four-session series is $20 per person. RSVP by Jan. 24. Send a check to Beth Emeth Congregation of the West Valley, 13702 W. Meeker Blvd, Sun City West, AZ 85375. To pay by credit card call 623-584-7210. Office hours are 9 a.m.-noon Monday-Friday. Visit bethemethaz.org for a registration form. Send registration form with payment.
