Sun City West club’s camp introduces kids to machine fun

Kids’ Sewing Camp gives grandchildren of Sun City West residents an experience few children have: sewing with a machine.

Rip ‘N’ Sew members Connie Province and Sally Kinzel ran the June camp and will reprise their roles for the 1:30-3:30 p.m. July 28 and Aug. 18 camps. The summer camps are free and held at Rip ‘N’ Sew on the upper level of the Johnson Recreation Center.

Joy Campbell of Sun City West registered her 8-year-old granddaughter, Reagan Campbell of Surprise. Heather Lainhart, a Rip ‘N’ Sew member, signed up grandson Milo Tirrell, a 6-year-old from Peoria.

All campers played sewing bingo and practiced using a machine by following straight and curved lines on paper. Younger campers including Milo decorated a tote bag with cut-outs and sewed trim around the top of the bag. Older campers including Reagan sewed a bag that closes with a drawstring.

Lainhart said Milo showed and told his parents everything he had done at camp.

“Sewing was the best part,” Lainhart said Milo told his family.

Reagan also liked camp.

“She really enjoyed it and was pretty pleased with her project,” Campbell said of her granddaughter.

Only residents of Sun City West with a valid Rec Center card can register a grandchild or other young friend or relative for the camps, which are open to ages 5 through 12. Registration must be done when Rip ‘N’ Sew is open, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. weekdays in the summer.
