Sun City West church hosting weekly drives for food bank donations

Desert Garden United Church of Christ, 18818 N. 128th Ave., Sun City West, has established a weekly drive-thru food drive.

“Because of increased unemployment the Valley View Food Bank’s demand has grown significantly,” the church’s Mission Outreach Committee chair Ruth Dent stated in a news release. “We are responding by changing our monthly collection to weekly.”

Residents wanting to contribute non-perishable items may drive to the church and drop the food off at the office door or fellowship hall door to avoid personal contact. The items should be left between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Church volunteers will then deliver the food to the Valley View Community Food Bank, 10771 W. Peoria Ave., Sun City. Email office@desertgardenchurch.org.

For those in need, Valley View Community Food Bank is open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

“Every health and safety protocol possible will be observed to keep our clients and volunteers safe,” Valley View Food Bank founder Jesse Ramirez stated on the website. “But the needs of our community — and surrounding communities — will be met to the best of our ability to serve. There is suffering and hunger stalking our neighbors. We are committed to doing everything possible to help. The thrift stores are currently closed.”

Walk-ins welcome. Weekend volunteers needed.

Call 623-933-3358, email vvcfb@yahoo.com, or visit www.feedingaz.org to directly contact Valley View Community Food Bank.
