Olivia Black, a senior at Valley Vista High School in Surprise, was awarded a $2,500 STAR scholarship from the international women’s group, P.E.O.

Olivia was sponsored for the award by local P.E.O. Chapter CG, Sun City West, and is among 900 young women in the United States and Canada to receive the scholarship for the academic year 2022-23.

P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) has six different educational award categories including scholarships, grants and loans, as well as the stewardship of their own Cottey College in Nevada, MO. Founded in 1869, the heart of P.E.O. has always been furthering education for women.

Olivia was selected to apply for the scholarship by a committee of Chapter CG members who based their decision upon her academic achievements, her leadership skills and her focus on educational goals and her passion for community involvement.

Olivia has been accepted into the nursing program at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. She has worked as a medical assistant at Peoria Foot and Ankle Clinic and will soon begin as a technical nurses assistant at Sunview Respiratory and Rehabilitation Center in Youngtown.

Olivia hopes to specialize in maternity labor and delivery and midwifery. It has been her dream since age seven to work with delivering babies, since visiting her baby brother in the hospital.
