Spinella: Letters spur reader to respond

Posted

Two letters were printed in the Sun City West Independent Jan. 27, 2021 I feel need some response.

First, a resident was “appalled” and moved to “tears” at the sight of a homeowner displaying our American flag in the position of “distress.” As a Vietnam veteran, I can sympathize with her emotion but would like to remind her that the homeowner’s display was legal. The fact that they displayed our flag in such a position for 24 hours during the presidential inauguration and not on Jan. 6 during the capitol demonstration was a true response of fear and distress for our great country — a fear about 70 million or more Americans share.

With due respect, I understand the woman’s feelings but for the other half of Americans, of which I am one, applaud the homeowner on La Terraza for her action.

Second, in a letter to the editor avbout an Impeach Trump banner the writer stated “…it is reasonable to expect the impeachment for incitement of insurrection. Impeachment was and is necessary even if only to serve as an example for future presidents.” Once again, with due respect to the writer, your personal hatred for Donald Trump and obvious research from progressive liberal websites may have clouded your opinion.

I also listened to the hour-long recording of the conference call between our president and Mr. Raffensperger — including four legal attorneys. I heard not one threat nor one demand from Trump to lie, cheat or break the law in any way. Incitement of Insurrection? Reviewing some of President Trump’s many speeches I see very little difference in his style of presentation or choice of words. An Incitement charge? Not according to constitutional lawyers or Supreme Court cases (Clarence Brandenburg v. Ohio establishing the legal standard for violent speech).

Still, we can respectively agree to disagree.

I would like to commend Mr. Sommerville on his necessity for impeachment, thus setting an “…example for future presidents.” I believe, sir, you will surely have another opportunity to make that case within the next four years.
