Shew guides readers for vision impaired

Posted

Name: Sarah Shew, board president.

Business name: Recorded Recreational Reading for the Blind, mornings, hours vary, Monday-Friday; call 623-933-0985 or email rrrbscty@fastq.com or visit readingfortheblind.org.

Town/neighborhood: Peoria.

Personal background highlights: From Indianapolis. Lived in Arizona since 1972, having moved here so my husband could work on his Ph.D. at Arizona State University.

Professional background highlights: Enjoyed working for lawyers and for court administration at Maricopa County Superior Court until 2006. After retirement, I got my real estate sales license and am currently an associate broker at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices AZ Properties.

What I do that I love: Currently I serve on the Recorded Recreational Reading for the Blind Board of Directors. “Hands-on” activity as a director, aka sound engineer. Although I love to read, my voice isn’t the sound you’d like to hear in an audio book, so I work outside the sound booth, listening as the narrator reads, recording what is read, stopping and starting throughout until what is read and recorded is word-perfect.

What I like most about doing business here: I am one of two dozen volunteers who are enthusiastic about the opportunity to serve others and share creatively for the benefit of those we serve.

My family: Married to Steve Shew. We have one daughter, Jenny Kew.

My interests and hobbies: Reading, knitting, working jigsaw puzzles.

People who inspire me (and how): RRRB volunteers who donate their time, talent and energies to publish audio for the enjoyment of the low-vision community.

My guiding philosophy: In everything you do, put God first.
