Residents can glean with Desert Garden

Desert Garden United Church of Christ is inviting the community to join its team in gleaning for St. Mary’s Food Bank.

For 10 weeks, from Jan. 21 through March 25, volunteers will gather at 8:30 a.m. in the church’s parking lot, 11818 N. 128th Ave., and go glean from 9 to 11 a.m.

John Riddle, chairperson of the Mission Outreach Committee, is coordinating the effort.

“Currently, we have committed to as many trees as we will be able to glean,” Mr. Riddle said. “With some community volunteers we estimate we could respond to 60 to 70 requests. This helps home owners and definitely helps the many families who now rely on the food bank.”

Each Saturday in February, the church will host Citrus Saturday for people who do their own gleaning. St. Mary’s Food Bank staff and trucks will be in the church parking lot 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27 to accept the fruit.

For further information or to volunteer, call 623-584-1795 or contact John Riddle at jriddle817@cox.net.
