Resident honored for Military Order of the World Wars service

Posted

John Hannan was sworn in May 7 as Commander of the West Valley Chapter 131 of the Military Order of the World Wars.

Hannan has been a man wearing many hats with the West Valley Chapter over the last several years and most recently as Chapter Chaplain.

In addition to serving as Commander of Chapter 131, Hannan serves on the board of directors for the Salvation Army in Surprise.

The Motto of the MOWW is “It is nobler to serve than be served,” and that motto and the missions of patriotic education for youth in the Arizona Youth Leadership Conference, Massing of the Colors and Service of Remembrance and achievement awards for ROTC and JROTC cadets brought Hannan to the MOWW and to the West Valley Chapter.

Though the chapter is currently small in number it boasts many dedicated “companions” such as Hannan, whose goals are to increase membership by promoting the missions, continue the Massing of the Colors service in February 2023, present awards to ROTC and JROTC cadets at their schools in the West Valley and Prescott and continue supporting high school youth attending the week-long Arizona Youth leadership conference this summer.

The MOWW is veteran service organization dedicated to selflessly serving others. MOWW membership eligibility is open to active duty, retired and former commissioned or warrant officers of the uniformed services of the United States. It also includes the United States Public Health Service and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. Membership may be either as a regular member (renew membership year-to-year) or as a perpetual member (a member forever, even after death).

Captain Hannan has been a regular member for five years. He was also presented a perpetual member pin at a special ceremony May 7. He will be presented his perpetual membership certificate at the West Valley Chapter regular meeting Oct. 8.
