RCSCW board candidate Anne Becknell recently endorsed board candidate Nick Turner on the Sun City West Witches Ride Facebook page. Becknell opined that Turner was truly knowledgeable concerning the association’s charter clubs and the association’s finance matters.
Turner’s actions have not helped the charter clubs. Turner and others amended the rules for charter clubs, which resulted in a significant increase in the number and content of rules that make it difficult for clubs to comply with all of the rules.
Becknell praised Turner’s knowledge of financial matters without foundation, but Turner recently accepted association Chief Financial Officer Clif Swann’s conclusion that association employees were paid less than the market. The study discussed by Swann, and relied upon by Turner, did not compare association pay to that of employees at similar organizations.
Swann recently contacted three similar retirement golf communities in the Phoenix area to obtain golf course maintenance facts, but did not ask for salary data for these entities.
Turner did not ask Swann why salaries for neighboring communities were not considered in Swann’s assessment that association compensation was lower than the norm. Turner used Swann’s salary analysis in a recent forum without considering its validity.
Turner has made life more difficult for charter clubs. His willingness to accept management representations without review is problematic.
Becknell should obtain the facts before she endorses someone.
The governing board needs directors who question the conclusions of the association’s management. Association bylaws require management oversight, and we need to elect individuals who have the skills to effectively legislate, and the desire to oversee management.
