Reader advises RCSCW director to look in the mirror

Posted

In a recent Recreation Centers for Sun City West Governing Board meeting, Director Tim Hurley called unsuccessful board candidates “toxic.”

His animosity appears to stem from the 2023 effort to recall Mr. Hurley and Dick Rhodes for failure to oversee management as the association bylaws mandate. This lack of oversight resulted in the association not preserving capital, our most valuable asset. The parties to the recall specifically asserted that association policy regarding investments had been violated, resulting in actual and unrealized losses in the millions. The policy prohibits investments that risk capital, yet 100% of the investments made risked capital.

The governing board has continuously refused to review the compensation of association senior staff members. The association’s CFO concluded that employee compensation was paid 88% of the amount paid for similar positions. Relying on the CFO’s conclusion without an analysis of how his conclusions were determined is bewildering. Does anyone expect the CFO to conclude that senior staff are overpaid?

Recently, the association hired a full-time IT person who is paid about $100,000 per year, but the employee who formerly held the IT operations position was not discharged, nor was their salary adjusted. Why?

I believe Mr. Hurley needs to look in the mirror regarding his actions as a governing board member, and recognize that a recall against him and Mr. Rhodes was initiated because the parties believed they failed in their duty to oversee management, not because of personal animosity.

Mr. Hurley also appears to blame the governing board for his removal as president, when in fact, his actions were the cause.
