This is in response to the letter on in-person attendance at the Recreation Centers of Sun City West Governing Board monthly workshop on March 14, 2025, regarding the financial budget.
Apparently, the author is biased against the five candidates running for the board who were not in the room for the meeting. They failed to consider the online streaming on YouTube that is done for every meeting. I have watched every meeting live from home, with coffee in hand. Saying that we don’t have a commitment to involve ourselves by not attending in person is false.
In the Feb. 20, 2025, regular governing board meeting, Dennis Horvath made a motion to replace a pump and seven-year-old wiring on the Echo Mesa Golf Course at a cost of $111,201.
I spent my career working at our five nuclear generating stations in Illinois. They have a lot of pumps in each plant. When your brakes go bad on your car, do you buy a new car? I have seen many pumps taken apart to have maintenance done on them. Yes, bearings go bad and impellers get worn that need to be replaced. The electrical motors seem to last a very long time, but they have bearings, too. Repairing equipment is done at a lower cost than replacement. Seven-year-old wiring needs to be replaced?
Our houses, some of which are 40 years old, don’t need all the wiring stripped out and replaced. Under the streets of Chicago, we have underground cables over 70 years old and they are still working just fine. Nobody seems to question the vendor when they want to do expensive work. They just rubber-stamp the project, no questions asked.
I, for one, didn’t appreciate being accused of not being committed to the governing board issues because I physically wasn’t in attendance.
