PORA member calls for ‘new blood,’ fresh approach

Posted

Sun City West’s Property Owners Residents Association has served the interests of residents for 46 years at no financial cost to them, members or not.

PORA’s considerable achievements are a matter of historical fact.
All residents, including detractors, have reaped the benefits of labor rendered by an essentially all-volunteer force of members who have given of their time and personal resources. The time has come to seek a fresh approach in looking out for ourselves.

An organization rises or falls on the quality of its board of directors. PORA’s board needs new blood, people who are enthusiastic about the quality of life in Sun City West.

The board desperately needs people with a strategic vision for a community being impacted by growth all around.

A bias for action — getting stuff done — should be the mantra of every single director. There is no room for those who seek the limelight of name or photo recognition.

As in football, the board must do the “down-field blocking” for the institution. It must be the ambassador for its members, motivated to look out for immediate and long-term interests of the community.

It must integrate its efforts to the extent practicable with those of the Recreation Centers of Sun City West and local, county, state and federal levels of government.

The board must be a force for action and have no conflicts of interest, particularly in matters of finances. Further, it must have a staff adequate to its requirements, to wit it must hire a general manager, sufficiently youthful and energetic, possessing professional fundraising (advancement) skills.
Sun City West is the “800-pound gorilla” in the West Valley. We PORA members must capitalize on that well-deserved reputation and elect a fresh, new board that can move mountains.

Such is our duty to the community.
