Northwest Valley Democrats energized for November elections

Posted

Residents turned out for the Northwest Valley Democrats Club's last meeting Oct. 9.

Nearly 100 voters attended the event.  Club President Maria Bears opened the meeting, followed by a presentation from  Defenders of Democracy, led by Director Jim McConnell and accompanied by readers Darla Akins, Diane Herman, Bill Shields and Tom Swenson.

The group presented "It Can’t Happen Here, Again." The nearly 30-minute long dramatic reading captured the spirit of the 1936 Sinclair Lewis novel and play, which had an impact on that year’s presidential election. The play dialogue also contrasted 1936 events with the political events of today.

Following the reading, Cathy Sigmond, co-founder of Civic Engagement Beyond Voting, a grass-roots, nonpartisan organization that works to empower Arizona’s citizens to exercise their voices at the local level, presented the ballot issues facing Arizona and Maricopa voters in the upcoming November election. She offered the pros and cons of each proposition, noting that several of the propositions would become Arizona Constitutional amendments, if they pass.

Barbara Fike, Democratic candidate for the Arizona House of Representatives, District 28, was also present and said a few words in support of her campaign.  She urged everyone to vote in this election.

The club is accepting nominations for board positions, which are one year terms, as the annual election will be  at the Wednesday, Nov. 13  meeting. The Northwest Valley Democrats hold general meetings 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month (September through May), at the Sun City West Foundation Quail Room, 14465 R.H. Johnson Blvd. Visit https://northwestvalleydemocrat.com/
