Walter “Lee” Subke

At 97 years old, Walter “Lee” Subke, a World War II veteran and former first-chair flutist of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, continues to bring joy and inspiration to the residents and staff of Sun City West Assisted Living and Memory Care.
Every day, Subke demonstrates that age is no barrier to an active and fulfilling life as he participates in community exercise programs, plays Bingo, enjoys games like Mexican Train dominoes and, most notably, giving flute performances 11 a.m. every Tuesday before lunch.
Subke’s passion for music began early. Born in 1927 to a Presbyterian clergyman and a professional pianist, he developed a love for music that took him from his school band to the prestigious Julliard School of Music, eventually leading to a 35-year career with the San Francisco Symphony. Despite retiring decades ago, Subke’s love for music never faded. Now, each week, residents and visitors alike are treated to his flute melodies, a talent honed from years of experience at the pinnacle of classical music performance.
Subke’s contributions to the community extend beyond music. As an official Ambassador of Sun City West Assisted Living, Subke exemplifies a spirit of service, kindness and camaraderie. His involvement in the community’s fitness programs, social events and leadership role continues to motivate other residents to stay active and engaged in their journeys.
“Lee is a true inspiration to everyone here at Sun City West,” said Carrie Kaye, the Life Enrichment Director of Sun City West Assisted Living. “We are so fortunate to have him share his talents and energy with us each day.”
Subke’s story is one of enduring love and devotion, not only to his craft but also to his late wife, Barbara Jean, to whom he was married for over 60 years. Together they raised three children, one of whom lives nearby in Arizona, making frequent visits to see her father. Subke remains deeply proud of his family, especially his grandson, whom he often shares stories about.
Though Subke’s legacy in music is remarkable, his true legacy lies in how he lives each day by the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This simple yet profound philosophy is reflected in his active participation and positive influence at Sun City West.
