Meals of Joy, a Litchfield Park-based nonprofit meal delivery service for West Valley seniors in need, has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Microsoft COVID-19 Response Fund.

Funds will be used to provide no-cost meals to seniors who live below the poverty limit or are medically disabled, according to a news release.

Since the start of the pandemic, demand for the organization’s hot and ready-to-eat meals has increased 3 1/2 times their normal meal distribution. Meals of Joy is delivering more than 700 meals per week to seniors across the West Valley, the release stated.

“We are thrilled to be a recipient of the Microsoft grant funding, which will help support our efforts to bring a fresh, never frozen, and tasty meal to as many seniors as possible,” Meals of Joy Founder Larry Cervarich stated. “Our seniors need our program now more than ever, so they can stay at home and stay healthy.”

The Microsoft C19 Response Fund, created and managed by Microsoft’s Datacenter Community Development team, is designed to support the evolving needs of communities that host Microsoft datacenters as they grapple with health, education and everyday life needs brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic response. The team is committed to serving community needs and answering the calls for help and solidarity, the release stated.

“Microsoft is honored to partner with Meals of Joy to help feed seniors in the West Valley who live independently and cannot afford to go out to buy food with the threat of the COVID-19,” said Adonis Trujillo, program manager and Arizona community lead for the Microsoft Datacenter Community Development team. “In this time of great need in communities around the world, it is important that we support organizations such as Meals of Joy that are stepping up to meet the needs of individuals in response to this pandemic.”

Founded in 2014, Meals of Joy prepares fresh, tasty, home-delivered meals for seniors who are unable to prepare their own food, desire convenience or independent living, and for patients recuperating at home.

Organization volunteers currently deliver meals five days per week, the release stated.

For information or to begin meal service, seniors may call 623-594-9588 or email info@scosic.org for an application menus and order forms.
