Local Voices: Where to camp in the winter?

Posted

Local camping enthusiasts recommend some areas for camping during the cooler months.

Just moved from Indiana in March and now we are settled in we’d like to get to some camping. Where are some nice places to go this time of the year; not really wanting to go too far north because we left Indiana because we are sick of the freezing cold winters. — Eric Russell

Rim country

Up on the Mogollon Rim (2 hours north) you are looking around 30 degrees at night right now. Anything closer is definitely more desert scenery. Up in the Payson area you’ll be good for a while till it gets Indiana cold.

Get low

Right now, anywhere that’s around 3,000 feet and under is good. — Todd Worden

Southern climes

There are some nice places this time of year around the major lakes that won’t get too cold. Down south in the foothills of the Catalina mountains north of Tucson are good, too. You’ll likely see a good number of hunters in the south. — Mark Smith

Get lost

Check out the state parks in Phoenix. Temperatures will be good. Lost Dutchman and Lake Pleasant are two that we enjoy. — Rebecca Rich-Hoyt
