Lexvold: Why you need to wear a mask

Posted

I have heard and read many complaints about wearing masks — “they infringe on my rights,” “they are hot,” “they are not necessary,” “I don’t have any symptoms,” etc.

All of these verbal and written protests about this subject upset me a lot. I am one of the “at risk” persons. If I were to contract the coronavirus, I would be very ill and probably end up dying. Because of this, I rarely leave my house, and when I do, it is with a mask on. I do not want to take a chance on getting this awful virus.

The problem is I hear of many businesses, including pharmacies, grocery stores and other general stores where the majority of the patrons do not have masks on. Because of this, I am unable to enter these places even with a mask on so that I am not exposed to the virus. Some people may be asymptomatic but still spreading the virus. I think it would be good if we all respected everybody’s rights and quit only thinking of our own rights.

The other problem with this is the virus will keep spreading, so instead of me being on personal isolation for a couple of months, I will be restricted to my home for a much longer time. I know you do not know me, but I am sure you know high risk people, including your grandparents. How would you feel if you gave them this virus and they died or became deathly ill?

We need to think of more people than just ourselves.
