Change was the topic of conversation during the weekly 103.1 FM KSCW Rec Center Show Sept. 1 with host Gary Cohen.

Recreation Centers of Sun City West General Manager Bill Schwind and Special Events Manager Kasey Huhta joined radio host Gary Cohen to discuss the cancellation of special events through 2020 and what the future looks like for the association.

The week of Aug. 31 marked the final streaming concerts for the summer.

“We think it went over pretty well being new and people had to learn technology, and thank you for that. We did have to cancel all events for 2020 and right now we are working on refunds for fall fests. If you are a patron, please stay patient, we are working on them,” Ms. Huhta said.

She explained the events staff is working on bringing new creative events to Sun City West, such as drive-in movies, a virtual 5K during the Thanksgiving holiday and curbside Christmas.

“Also, we’ll have letters to Santa for Sun City West residents who have grandchildren and will have full information in the next Rec Center News,” she said.

Additionally, Ms. Huhta said in an effort to ease people’s minds regarding the cancellation of future events, the decision has a lot to do with contracts and RCSCW officials had to take into consideration the ticket fees associated with each ticket. They had to pay those out, which is an automatic loss.

If the drive-in movie goes well, association officials will add more throughout the year, Ms. Huhta added.

“We also want to play it safe and make sure we are. I think we have done a great job as a community of being aware and alert and if things start lightening up I can promise you a lot of musicians are out there ready to sing and entertain and if that ever happens we won’t have a problem getting people in,” she said.

Ms. Huhta added there is not a whole lot available where distancing can play a role, other than distancing individuals with cars and virtually looking into other options possibly out there.

Typically, the calendar through 2022 would be close to complete, but things are different looking ahead.

“We are taking this in baby steps and then taking small precautions making small commitments and doing what we can. We’ve stopped all sales for everything we have to keep numbers down and hopefully we can look forward to a bright future,” she said.
